This week we celebrated the 41st anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. A day that will live in infamy for any member of the LGBTQ community! Civil rights. Easy words, difficult concepts. As the saying goes, we’ve come a long way, baby. The life I lead today is very different from the life portrayed in Stone Butch Blues (affiliate link) and yet, I still do not have the freedoms of other Americans.
I do not have the freedom to marry the person I choose to marry. I do not have the freedom to openly serve my country in military service. It is still a derogatory slam to any unmarried woman, just ask Elena Kagan. Since her
nomination as a Supreme Court Justice the public discussion of her sexuality has been main stream news. Many have called it a smear campaign. However, the fact remains that it is considered a smear and slander, WHY?
For that matter, why is the fact that there is a photo of her playing softball make her a lesbian? Hell, my mom and my sister played softball. Neither is a lesbian. Granted, I also played softball – I was the worst of the three players – but I only played for the girls <grin>. With my family statistics as my only fodder, one in three softball players is a lesbian. Without knowing the other players on ‘Kagan’s Team’ we can never determine her sexual orientation just by her softball skills.
I must admit, I am surprised some religious nut has not suggested she is sleeping with animals! Really, why do these nuts always equate homosexuality with bestiality and pedophilia? I have never looked at an animal and thought ‘oh yea, I need some of that’ it is just something I have never thought of. I must admit I worry about those who do! I worry about the religious nut that holds these thoughts in their head to even make the leap.
I read a news story today about a Woman in Utah, who went online, found Bestiality photos, and took the face of a 13 year-old classmate of her daughter and pasted in the photo. She then disseminated these photos around the school. (I digress)
My point today is 41 years and we are still fighting the battle….makes me feel black!

I loved your blog. It is so true, and I agree. I believe you should have the right to marry whoever you wish. Why should only the straight people suffer? I am a Christian, but I certainly not anywhere near perfect. I do not think being gay is a sin. I think what people forget is that God may have influence men to write the Bible, but men were the ones to edited it. I don’t think being gay is a choice. If it was a sin, why were some born that way. With how difficult it is for gay people, who would choose to live that way? Truth is, life is tough for everyone. If life weren’t difficult, what would be the point?
