New Year’s Resolutions

December 30, 2009

It’s that time of year when most people reflect on the past year and resolve to make changes in the year to come.  This is done in many different ways; setting goals, writing down resolutions, joining a gym, etc.  When you search Google for “New Year’s Resolutions” about 71 million sites come up.  Most telling you how to keep those resolutions, some giving ideas about what to change (really, if you don’t know you need to change it, should you even try?), and some are even quizzes that will tell you exactly what your resolutions should be.

I have made resolutions in the past, and rarely have they stuck.  But I am making them again this year, trying a new approach that makes sense to me.  However, I’m not here today to be another voice telling you how to keep your resolutions…..it’s hard and very personal.

What I do want to do is pose a question.  I know that is usually my co-worker, Question Marks method, but I’ve had this question on my mind and wanted to pose it to the readers for their input.  So, here it is.  Does anyone make negative New Year’s Resolutions?   Like “I resolve to be more cynical?”  Or “This year I think I’ll eat what I want, when I want and never exercise?”

On the one hand, it seems to defeat the purpose which is to better oneself.  But why is that the purpose?  Can’t someone make a resolution to be the same, or worse, than they were in the past?  It would certainly be an easier way to go.  You would feel more sense of accomplishment, knowing you were able to reach your goals.  There would be less depression.  Unless someone resolved to be more depressed……

I’m not saying I’m going to do this.  I will make my positive resolutions and try my best to stick to them, become a better person.  I’m not even saying that anyone should resolve to be worse.  I’m just wondering if there are those out there that do…..

Happy New Year!  And good luck with whatever comes for you in 2010.
