What does the above video have to do with religion?
Last week I had a discussion with a friend about this song. I say the song is about sex. My friend says it is a song about an accordion. We argued for quite some time as we each shared our insights to the songs meaning. The reality is we are probably both right. The surface is accordion but the deeper implication is sex. 
In my experience, religion is this way. There is the surface meaning and then the deeper implication. Unfortunately, in our country today those who would claim religious beliefs are frequently hiding behind that surface meaning to hide their deeper implications.
For example, how many pedophiles become Catholic priests just for the free access to little boys? I submit to you that there are more Priests who are pedophiles than there are pedophiles in any other profession. Why? Because lay people are so busy with the surface meaning of being a priest (supposedly of God) that the deeper implication of pedophilia goes unnoticed.
I will never hire any worker who has a fish (the symbol of Christianity) on his or her advertisements, business card or vehicle. Why? Because my experience is that they are hiding behind the surface meaning (that they are honest and reputable because of their relationship with a higher power) the deeper implication that they are ready, willing and able to fuck you over. Run do not walk from these people. They are the first to steal, lie or cheat in order to make a buck; of course, all while extending the right hand of fellowship. 
This brings me to Ted Haggard. Ted began his walk with God in 1972. He has spent a lifetime teaching the ‘principals of God’. No doubt, Ted has worn out his knees as he spends time in meditation and prayer. Nevertheless, as it turns out prayer wasn’t the ONLY reason Ted was on his knees. Teddy boy was taking one for the team, right in the ….. Again, there was the surface meaning as a diversion for the deeper implication.
Which are you? Do you think the song is about an accordion? Or is it about sex? Your soul may depend on the depths of your thought.
