On March 24, 1989, the tanker Exxon Valdez grounded on Bligh Reef in Alaska’s Prince William Sound, rupturing its hull and spilling nearly 11 million gallons of Prudhoe Bay crude oil into a remote, scenic, and biologically productive body of water. At the time it was the largest single oil spill in US waters.
On April 20th the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill) began. A government panel of scientists said the oil spill was leaking between 1.47
million and 2.52 million gallons a day. As we approach day 58 it seems safe to say we have surpassed the damage of the Exxon Valdez. If we take the low estimate, that’s 85.26 million gallons. The high estimate puts us at 146.16 million gallons. Just to give it perspective thats at a minimum 8 times the devistation of the Exxon Valdez!
I have watched as birds and other wildlife are being tortured by the oils. It is a painful and unnecessary death.
I believed this would be the beginning of a reasonableness with regard to off shore drilling. Maybe even a reasonableness with regard to our addiction to fossil fuels.
Then I read the most amazing story! On the day when we get some tough talk from the Oval Office, I read : Gulf Lawmakers to Obama: It’s Time to Lift Ban on Offshore Drilling
WHAT THE FUCK?
I’ve linked to the full story, read it and weep! The nutshell is that these assholes think “the loss of revenues from the moratorium is costing too much in revenues”. It all goes back to the root of ALL evil money.
Now, the British Prime Minister has called President Obama to say “Stop Bullying Us Over BP”
Since the oil started leaking after an explosion on April 20, BP’s shares have lost 40% of their value. That has potentially dire consequences for some of the country’s biggest pension funds with huge stakes in the company — the National Association of Pension Funds estimates that U.K. pension funds’ exposure to BP is about 1.5% of the funds’ total assets, which are worth more than £800 billion (about $1.18 trillion). And Obama’s public statements on BP, many Britons feel, aren’t helping matters.
Well no offense to the Brits (although they have been trouble makers in the past) but take your bloody thumb out of your arse and put it in the dyke (so to speak). Stop the fuckin leak and we can begin to talk about how much you owe.
Like my work? Buy me a beer, or shot, (or a KEG) for my efforts…
